Sjalfsbjorg (literally "self-help") is a national federation for physically disabled people; it was founded on June 4. 1959. There are now 17 Sjalfsbjorg organisations all over Iceland. The goal of Sjalfsbjorg is to fight for the equality of disabled people in all fields. Sjalfsbjorg wants to inform the public aware of the circumstances of physically disabled people. In spite of many kinds of improvement to the benefit of disabled people over the last several years, there is still a long way to go to reach equality. There are nearly 3000 members of Sjalfsbjorg, and more than half of them are physically disabled. Sjalfsbjorg's headquarters are at Hatun 12, 105 Reykjavik. The offices of the national federation and the Sjalfsbjorg Community Centre are on the first floor of the west wing of Hatun 12.
